College Entrance Exams

As you prepare for college, you may encounter at least one college entrance exam. The two college entrance exams that are available for you to take are:

ACT: This exam consists of four sections. English, math, reading, and science reasoning. The purpose of the test is to measure skills and knowledge developed through middle and high school.

**The ACT is the preferred test for colleges and universities in the Midwest and is accepted for admissions at almost all colleges. BPHS recommends that all students who are considering a 4-year college or university, take the ACT. Those students who are considering taking the SAT should visit with Mrs. Worke before registering.

SAT I: This test is the longer version of the PSAT, which some juniors took in October. The three-hour long SAT I consists of two verbal and two mathematical parts.

SAT II: These are one-hour exams in 18 areas such as writing, mathematics, science, world languages and history. Students select the exams they take. Some colleges that require the SAT I also require the SAT II’s.

The Counseling Department recommends online registration because it is faster and you know when you register if your test site is open or closed. However, students may pick up a paper ACT or SAT application from Mrs. Worke.

On the registration websites there is also practice tests, tips and strategies for performing well on the college entrance exams. The test dates and registration deadlines are also available on the website.

What is College Now? College Now is SMSU’s concurrent enrollment program. Concurrent enrollment (also called “dual credit” or “dual enrollment”) allows qualified high school students to earn college credit in their high school, during their regular school day. College Now classes are taught by qualified high school teachers and supervised by SMSU faculty members. College Now classes are actual SMSU courses where students earn actual SMSU credit. There is no cost to the student for these courses, providing an outstanding opportunity for students to earn college credit and jump start their college careers without incurring additional debt. Benefits of Participating in College Now The advantages to taking College Now courses are numerous:

• It allows students to earn college and high school credit simultaneously.
• It’s an alternative to the senior doldrums.
• It’s a great transition and introduction to university study.
• It allows for more flexible scheduling upon enrollment at the university.
• It allows earlier completion of general education requirements.
• It’s a demonstration of a commitment to university admissions officials.
• It may lead to early completion of a degree program.
• Unlike AP, it concludes with a college grade on a college transcript; AP courses are high school courses that teach to a “one shot” test and may not even count toward general education requirements.

Student Eligibility Requirements Seniors – need to meet one of the following requirements:

• a 3.0 GPA or above in high school
• be in the top half of their graduating class
• score in the 50^th percentile on a nationally standardized test

Juniors – need to meet one of the following requirements:

• a 3.0 GPA or above in high school
• be in the top third of their graduating class
• score in the 70^th percentile on a nationally standardized test

Sophomores – need to meet one of the following requirements:

• a 3.5 GPA or above in high school
• be in the top 10% of their graduating class
• have scored in the 90th percentile on a nationally standardized test

Transcripts and recommendation letter must be sent to the College Now Office to verify sophomore eligibility. Students not meeting these standards can complete the College Now Student Appeal if interested in earning college credit Southwest Minnesota State Marshall (SMSU) courses offered at Blooming Prairie High School

Did you know that any professional who works with children is considered a “Mandatory Reporter”? The Minnesota Maltreatment of Minors Law – 626.556 requires all professionals to report to Social Services or Law Enforcement when “you know or have reason to believe” that a child has been abused/neglected within the past three years. An oral report must be made within 24 hours and then followed up with a written report within 72 hours. The name of the reporter is CONFIDENTIAL and may be disclosed by court order only. All reporters are granted immunity from civil liability when acting in good faith.

Renaissance Program

Points are awarded based on:

• Cumulative GPA 2.8 and above for the quarter
• Community Service 6+ hours for the quarter 
• You are responsible for handing these in one week after the quarter ends.

Gold List Requirements:

• Meet both standard points
• Free admission to all home BPHS athletic events and dances

Silver Card Requirements:

• Meet 1 of the 2 standard points
• $2.00 off all home BPHS athletic events and dances

An office referral dismisses you from obtaining a Renaissance Card.

Q: What is our school code (or CEEB code)?

A: 240-260

Q: What is the CSS Profile?

A: The CSS (College Scholarship Service) Profile is a form released in January by the College Board Foundation. Many colleges require this form from applicants and the information from this form is used to determine wheter or not applicants may qualify for financial aid from the college. The initial registration form is released in mid-September and after this registration is complete, College Board will send out the forms to be filled in January.

Q: What is the FAFSA?

A: The FAFSA Free Application for Federal Student Aid is a form for college students and applicants to determine eligibility for federal financial aid.

Q: Do I need to fill out both the CSS Profile and the FAFSA?

A: You may or may not need to fill out both forms, depending on the college. Not every college requires both forms to be submitted, so be sure to know the requirements for each individual college.
