Nighttime Intermediate/High School Custodian

Blooming Prairie Public Schools is accepting applications for a night custodian at the Blooming Prairie Intermediate/High School. This position reports to the Facilities Manager. The hours will be 2:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. during the school year and 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the summer.
Purpose of Job
To support the mission and vision of Blooming Prairie Public Schools by providing students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and physically desirable place to learn, play, and develop.
Daily Custodial Duties
- Routinely clean restrooms and classrooms
- Lights turned on throughout the building
- Set-up for indoor events
- Be available to trouble-shoot issues at these events
- Clean areas after the event – concession stand, gymnasium, locker rooms – home and guest, entryways, etc.
Additional Responsibilities or Duties
Cleaning
Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, washing windows, scrubbing tables and desktops, emptying trash cans, sanitizing washrooms, etc. The School Custodians do whatever tasks are needed to keep the facility looking good and functioning properly. Besides aesthetics, their efforts contribute to keeping pests away and reducing the spread of germs.
Grounds Upkeep
School Custodians remove snow from sidewalks and parking lots. Other duties outside the building may include mowing grass, trimming bushes, weeding, removing debris from athletic fields and fencing.
Maintenance
When a light bulb needs to be changed, a window unstuck, a soap dispenser filled, a ceiling tile replaced or a coat of paint added, School Custodians take the lead. Depending on their level of knowledge, they also may perform services on pipes, heaters, air conditioners and wiring. When third party repair people are called in, School Custodians may guide them to the proper place or explain the problem.
Safety
School Custodians keep a lookout for potential problems, such as cracked sidewalks or faulty chairs. They abide by institutional and governmental guidelines regarding procedures and safety measures, such as keeping cleaning products away from children. School Custodians also are part of the administration’s eyes and ears and can play a large part in spotting tensions among students and curbing vandalism. If they are the first to arrive in the morning or the last to leave at night, School Custodians may be in charge of unlocking and locking doors.
Assisting staff
Teachers and administrators may ask School Custodians to perform tasks such as moving furniture, fixing broken lockers, unloading deliveries and handling an unexpected spill.
Qualifications
- Good physical health to perform lifting functions on objects of moderate size (50 lbs. +)
- Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities
- Communication skills including the ability to write, read and understand technical and maintenance manuals
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of individuals
- High school diploma or equivalent
Compensation: $20.09 – $27.81/hour, determined by experience.
